The farmers in Vietnam really get it.! The trees are for their benefit. TROFACO plant (together with or partner, CRED) in communities who just love trees. They used to have a real forest. Many trees were cut down in the 1980'es to earn foreign currency during the embargo against Vietnam.
Now the people and the government are eager to bring the forest back. The farmers select hard-wood timber species. And the farmers provide provide water and fertiliser. The trees TROFACO support are up high on the hills. Lower down the people plant fruit trees, for faster income. The good timber will pay for the education of their grandchildren - and provide some timber for the wooden houses they love. TROFACO's partner, CRED, works in medicinal plants. They will grow in the shade of the trees in a few years' time.
